Nutrition, Exercise and Health Lab
We have several laboratories specifically designed and equipped for the study of nutrition and exercise. The unit is used for teaching and research in nutrition and dietetics.
The Nutrition Unit consists of four laboratories:
• A product development laboratory
• A general teaching laboratory
• A nutritional analysis laboratory
• A clinical room

The Exercise Physiology Laboratory
The Exercise Physiology Laboratory has received a number of equipment upgrades for students
We have computerised systems for measuring ‘breath-by-breath’ pulmonary gas exchange with fully integrated software for programming cycle ergometers and treadmills. There is a separate seminar room attached to the main laboratory for analysing and interpreting physiological data. We also have other specialised technology for measuring sprint speed and muscle peak power with a near-infrared spectrometer for measuring changes in muscle oxygenation during exercise.

Derriford Research Facility
The University invests in life-changing medical research facility.
The University is proud to have built a prestigious £17 million facility to provide a research-intensive environment to investigate cancer; infection, immunity and inflammation; and neurodegenerative diseases, including:
• Brain tumours,
• dementia,
• Parkinson’s,
• Huntington’s,
• antibiotic resistance,
• oral cancer,
• non-Hodgkins lymphoma,
• Ebola and bovine tuberculosis.

Clinical Physiology Lab
Specialised laboratory for assessing cardiac physiology and pathophysiology
Students can perform various cardio-respiratory and anthropometric measurements in this laboratory.
Cardiac equipment includes blood pressure monitors, 12 lead electrocardiography (ECG) and analytics, stress ECG testing, echocardiography and heart rate variability.
